18th December 2012
Elizabeth Michael (Lulu) with purple dress, Surrounded by the Police
The investigation into the case facing actress Elizabeth Michael, popularly known as Lulu, who is charged with alleged murder over the death of a domestic film star, Steven Kanumba, is complete.

According to the investigations presented in court, it has been concluded that the accused will be facing manslaughter charge and not murder case, a charge she has been charged with.

The case will continue on December 21 with a new charge in force.

The prosecution led by State Attorney Ofmedy Mtenga informed the court yesterday that the case was supposed to came for mentioning but the investigation into the case is now complete.

“You honor, the investigation into the case is complete and today we were supposed to read the committal proceedings for the accused so that the file can be ready to be taken to the  High Court, but the Principal State Attorney Tumaini Kweka, who heard the case, is having another official duties,” said Mtega.

He also asked the court to set another date for reading the committal proceedings to the accused and Magistrate Augustina Mbando who presides over the case.

However, the accused will not be allowed to plead during the court session until the case reaches the High Court.

The case was brought back to Kisutu to proceed with the main suit after an application by Lulu’s counsel Kibatala, who wanted the court to determine the accused person’s actual biological age.

According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have committed the offence on April 7 at Sinza Vatican in Kinondoni district.

The accused, who earlier submitted that she was 17 years old and not 18 as per the charge sheet, is still in custody.

TFF to chop off institution clubs

18th December 2012
TFF president Leodegar Tenga
The  Tanzania Football Federation is expected to comply with the world football governing body FIFA in writing off top flight sides owned by single institutions.

FIFA has directed all football associations affiliated to the body globally to chop down all teams that are owned by institutions. In this case an Institution is supposed to won just one team and not more than that so as to have full-fledged competitive leagues.

Institutions that have more than one team in the current premiership flee will be forced to compress into just one football club.

In this case teams from Police, JKT and Sugar processors will be highly affected. JKT or National Service has a huge number of teams competing in the Mainland premiership.

JKT has five teams of Mgambo, Ruvu, Ruvu Shooting and Oljoro while Sugar processors have Mtibwa and Kagera.

The objective of the FUIFA directive is to improve the degree of competition among the teams in the leagues.

Multiple ownership of clubs within one institution has in most cases prompted match fixing particularly in circumstances when one team is on the verge of either winning the title or facing relegation.

So far it has not been proved a case for fixing results in the Mainland premiership but the situation once left to prevail might one day backfire.

The TFF president Leodegar Tenga said there is no short cut to the FUIFA directive and all teams owned by a single institution will have to be merged into one. He declined to comment when the chopping off of the teams will be effected but he acknowledged that the possibility is wide open and will be enforced.

The directive will not affect other premiership teams in the likes of Simba, Yanga, Azam, Toto Africa and Coastal Union.
However, Tanzania prisons and Police teams will be compelled to avoid other teams belonging to their institutions not to target premiership promotion.

TFF uncertain of Zambia arrival

18th December 2012

TFF information officer, Boniface Wambura
The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) is so far not sure when the African champions Zambia would land in Dar es Salaam ahead of the friendly international later this week.

The TFF information officer, Boniface Wambura, said probably today they might be in a position to know exactly when the team would jet in for the match.

Zambia had earlier confirmed to honour the friendly international against Tanzania national soccer team, Taifa Stars, days before Christmas.

The confirmation has prompted Taifa Stars coach Kim Poulsen to summon his players for a week-long training to gear up for the clash.

The Tanzania-Zambia match will be the second friendly in two months after playing against Kenya last month ahead of the Senior Challenge Cup in Mwanza.

All players for the Taifa Stars have reported and are training under the Danish coach at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam where the match will be played this weekend.

Taifa Stars squad has been highly boosted with the arrival of TP Mazembe’s striking duo of Mbwana Samata and Thomas Ulimwengu.

The duo’s release has in most cases been surrounded by uncertainty as they were not available during the Senior Challenge Cup championship that ended in Kampala on December 8.

The team would miss striker John Bocco, defender Said Nassor and goalkeeper Mwadini Ali for various reasons, including injury.

Otherwise, Wambura said the training goes on well and has been highly boosted by the change of weather that has helped to cool down simmering summer temperatures.

Zambia won the African championship for the first time in history when Gabon and Equatorial Guinea co-hosted the tournament in January through February this year.
The team would be leaving for South Africa where the Nations Cup will be held and they need to plot a title retention bid.

Their friendly in Dar es Salaam might be the last before boarding the flight to Johannesburg for title defence.

Arsenal started to heal the wounds inflicted by the Capital One Cup humiliation at League Two Bradford City with an impressive win at Reading.
Lukas Podolski gave Arsenal an early lead and the Gunners were four up on the hour mark after Santi Cazorla became only the third Spaniard to score a Premier League hat-trick after Fernando Torres and Jordi Gomez.

No choice but to fight - McDermott
Reading, utterly outclassed, raised the prospect of the most unlikely comeback as Adam Le Fondre and Jimmy Kebe scored twice in the space of five minutes.
But Theo Walcott, impressive in the central striker's role he sees as crucial to his Arsenal future, snuffed out any Reading optimism with a composed finish that sends Arsene Wenger's side up to fifth place in the table.
As an exercise in recovery after the misery of Bradford, this will have done Arsenal's confidence and morale a power of good - and supports Wenger's claim that his side still have plenty to offer this season.
It was a victory, however, that needs to be seen in the context of the limp opposition offered by Reading, who are now in serious danger of being cut adrift at the bottom of the Premier League, where they remain six points from safety.
Royals manager Brian McDermott has overseen progress that has taken Reading a long way in a short time - but there were spells on Monday when what is required in the Premier League looked a long way beyond them.
Arsenal dominated with embarrassing ease for long periods against a home side who, for the first hour at least, gave the ominous impression of a side simply passing through on their way back into the Championship.

Gunners domination

Arsenal have won all of their 11 competitive matches against Reading.
The presence of Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gave Arsenal a pace and movement Reading simply could not handle - with plenty of others, Cazorla chief among them, willing to join in to add extra attacking options.
Oxlade-Chamberlain delivered a taste of things to come in a harrowing opening half for Reading when he forced a fine save from keeper Adam Federici inside two minutes.
Reading had a couple of moments of encouragement when the powerful Pavel Pogrebnyak almost stole in behind Arsenal's defence, and again when Noel Hunt glanced a header just over.
But the visitors made good on their early threat after 14 minutes. Kieran Gibbs was the provider with a cross from the right, allowing Podolski to arrive in space and take a perfect first touch before firing past Federici.
Podolski then shot narrowly wide before Walcott's speed took him into open space behind Reading's hopeless defence only for Federici to block with his legs.
Federici was distinguishing himself amid the carnage around him and saved well from Jack Wilshere before Cazorla added an inevitable second just after the half-hour as he headed in Podolski's cross.
Reading were falling apart and Cazorla added the third soon after, again taking advantage of dreadful marking to swivel and beat Federici from close range.

Arsenal's Royal connection

Reading boss Brian McDermott started his playing career at Arsenal, making 72 appearances between 1977 and 1984.
The plight of the home side was cruelly illustrated when their own fans broke into ironic cheers to mark a short spell of possession, an act hardly designed to offer encouragement.
The Royals survived the first 15 minutes of the second half before Arsenal made it four, Cazorla completing his hat-trick after Wilshere found Podolski, who unselfishly set up the Spaniard for a simple finish.
As the Madejski sat back and waited for Arsenal to add more goals, Reading suddenly came to life and two quick goals briefly gave this one-sided game a competitive edge.
Le Fondre rounded Wojciech Szczesny to pull one back after 66 minutes and Kebe squeezed between two Arsenal defenders to at least give Reading some encouragement.

Win shows our strength - Wenger
In October when these teams last met, Arsenal recovered from 4-0 down to win an extraordinary Capital One Cup tie 7-5 in extra time, and perhaps home fans fleetingly spied revenge.
But Walcott deserved a goal for his endeavours and it duly arrived with a stylish finish to end Reading hopes.
Arsenal's fans appreciated his efforts and constantly urged Wenger to sort out the England attacker's contract impasse. When he departed late on, it was to a standing ovation.
Reading boss Brian McDermott: "I was very pleased with the response in the second half. Now we'll stick together and move on.
"We've got to fight, no doubt about that - that's the only choice we have.
"We had to do that last year, the year before that and the year before that when we were in a similar position in the Championship.
"I think people have forgotten where we have come from over a short period of time. But the fans got behind us, they saw in the second half we tried to have a go and get the goals back."
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: "At 4-0 we had a little wobbling period, and at 4-2 of course with what happened last week we became a bit uncertain before the 5-2 killed the game.
"But overall it was important to go out and play and give the right answer on the football pitch."

Nina ofa nono zaidi

Ngassa: Nina ofa nono zaidi

18th December 2012

Obama calls incoming Japan PM, close ties stressed

obama1 400TOKYO: US President Barack Obama spoke to Japan's incoming prime minister Shinzo Abe, with both sides stressing the importance of close ties, the White House said.

Abe, a former prime minister who is the head of the conservative opposition Liberal Democratic Party, and Obama "reaffirmed the importance of the US-Japan alliance as the cornerstone of peace and security in the region", it said.

"The president and Mr Abe discussed ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral security cooperation as well as deepening economic ties," White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a statement.

"They also agreed on the importance of close US-Japan cooperation on pressing regional and global issues."

Abe's LDP crushed the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, led by Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, in Sunday's polls, promising that he would improve Tokyo's alliance with Washington in a bid to ensure stability in Asia Pacific.

In a face of a confident China, Abe said a closer link with the United States would serve as a foundation for Tokyo to gain stronger diplomatic influence.

After speaking with Obama, Abe Tuesday told officials at Japan's business lobby Keidanren that he would deepen Japan's only alliance, Jiji Press reported.

"I plan to tackle regional and global challenges together with the United States," he told them, according to Jiji.

Abe said Monday he wanted to go to the United States in late January, after Obama's new cabinet members start work, for his first foreign visit after taking office, expected on December 26.

Abe went to China for his first foreign visit during his 2006-2007 tenure as prime minister.
